Pick the hero tour if
You want a first evening inside the basilica with the Doge's Palace kept optional — add it at booking if your group wants the longer night.
Pick the VIP tour if
Your group wants both landmarks in one evening: the basilica's crypt and Pala d'Oro, then the Doge's apartments, the Hall of the Great Council, the armoury, the prisons and the Bridge of Sighs.

You'd rather keep the group small — capped at six guests — and the evening short, at around 90 minutes inside the basilica alone.
